ACTION / MOTION: (This language identifies the formal motion to be made by the Council)

Council will take action on Resolution No. 07-18 ordering and calling a Primary Election to be held on Tuesday, August 28, 2018, and, if necessary, a General Election to be held on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, to nominate candidates for Council Member seats for Districts 4, 5, and 6 in the City of Buckeye; and to ratify the Updated General Plan for the City of Buckeye; providing for Spanish translation of election materials, deadlines for voter registration, and mailing of ballots.

SUMMARY

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: 

At the Primary Election, the qualified electors will vote for candidates for three Councilmember seats for Districts 4, 5, and 6 on Tuesday August 28, 2018, whose names shall appear on the ballot. Any candidates receiving a majority of all the votes cast at the Primary Election will be declared elected. The voters will also have the opportunity to ratify and approve or reject the General Plan update. City Council approval of the General Plan update is scheduled for the April 3, 2018 Regular Council Meeting. The General Election, scheduled for November 6, 2018, is called in the event the nominated candidates do not receive a majority of votes during the Primary Election.



BENEFITS:

This Resolution serves to call the election for three Councilmember seats and ratification and approval or rejection of the General Plan update. The General Election is called in the event the nominated candidates do not receive a majority of votes during the Primary Election.



FUTURE ACTION: Council and staff; does this need to be communicated internally/externally?

Although not required by statute, a Call of Election will be published in local newspapers to inform the public. The Maricopa County Elections Department will be notified for contract services; ballot language, and materials will be translated. Interested candidates may check out an election packet by appointment with the City Clerk. Signatures may be obtained by interested candidates. To become an official Regular Candidate, Signature Petitions, Nomination Paper, Campaign Finance Documents, and Financial Disclosure Statement may be officially filed with the City Clerk beginning April 30, 2018 and ending May 30, 2018 (by 5:00 p.m.). Arguments supporting or opposing the General Plan update must be submitted to the City Clerk by May 30, 2018.
